For most people, hopping in the shower used to be a simple 5 minute task. I, along with the TikTok girlies, are not most people. Have you ever thought about why stepping into a nice, steamy shower feels so good after a long day? Or, better yet, starting your day off with a hot shower especially on a cold winter morning. If either of those make you instantly calmer, then you’ll love TikTok’s newest ‘it’ beauty trend — the “Everything Shower”. #everythingshower has garnered 695M views while it’s big sister #showertok has over 6B views with users carrying their viewers through their extensive shower routines in detail. I mean, is there anything TikTok loves more than romanticizing the most basic, simple tasks of every day life?
Everything showers aren’t simply about washing your body. From slathering on deep conditioning treatments to exfoliating and shaving your body from head-to-toe, everything showers are all about self care, in the name of luxury. Some even like to combine a fluffy robe, scented candle, and a good playlist for their post-shower care. Aside from hopping on the bandwagon of another social media trend, a lot of users claim that their new shower routine helps with stress management. I can attest to this.
In all seriousness, I can honestly say that I have been implementing everything showers into my weekly routine unknowingly for the past 7 years. I say unknowingly because I only viewed my shower routine as just that — my shower routine. Proponents of my weekly shower routine are very calming and act as a great way to reset and unwind before going into a new week.
1. If it’s not hot, I don’t want it!
Step one for me is always starting with a steamy shower. If the water isn’t hot, I’m not getting in. (I know, it’s bad for my skin.) Once I’ve got the shower steamy enough where it’s still manageable, I hop in.
2. When detangling my hair feels like my biggest triumph
Next, I prioritize my hair — she’s the star of the show. If you have curly or textured hair, then you know just how much time and energy goes into caring for it. There’s specific products that I use every week for my hair. First, I start with a scrub to exfoliate my scalp. Next, I shampoo — only once. I never bought into shampooing twice; I don’t think it’s necessary and it makes my hair feel super dry. Once that’s done, it’s time to detangle and apply my detox mask to get rid of any leftover product that may still be sitting on my hair from the week before.
3. Strategizing the in-between
My strategy for keeping myself productive while I let this mask (or any other mask) sit in my hair is to exfoliate and shave. By the time I’m done with those tasks, it’s time to fully rinse the mask out of my hair.
4. Almost there…
The final step is obvious: soap up and rinse. I purposefully do this last because I’ve learned that the residue from my haircare products leave me with bacne. Therefore, scrubbing my back and shoulders with soap once I’ve completely rinsed out my hair products is a game changer. My last few steps for my post-shower routine is flossing my teeth, brushing my teeth, applying styling products to my hair, and diffusing my hair until it’s completely dry — in that exact order. I’ll also add that I do all of this while watching a Youtube video to keep me extra entertained.
Despite long showers being deemed trendy in the name of TikTok, you don’t need to partake in it if it doesn’t align or make you feel relaxed. But, if there’s one thing for sure, if you ever are in need of a stress relieving hack and have time to kill — an everything shower certainly won’t hurt.
